Healthy Hummus: A Walking Tour of Practical and Sustainable Gardening

Saturday, May 9, 2026
9:00 am11:00 am
Address will be provided upon registration

Join Conservation Nebraska, Dene Oglesby, and Paul Callahan for a land tour of the amazing small farming and land stewardship projects they are doing on their 9-acre property in Ashland. The tour will highlight a blend of traditional and non-traditional agriculture techniques, with highlights for those interested in urban farming practices or backyard gardening.

On the tour, you’ll get to explore: a native sensory trail, an example of silvopasture hugelkultur, a kitchen garden designed for microclimate and wildlife habitat, a greenhouse with composting, a biochar reactor and soil station, two companion planted orchards, and multiple examples of native pollinator gardens. Their fundamental focus is soil health over the long term, and they have had success using sustainable practices. A key feature you will find demonstrated across all spaces is creatively and sustainably using “waste” biomass for habitat creation, succession planting, and conservation of the most important elements for life.

There will be snacks and refreshments at the end of the tour for those who would like to have more in-depth Q&A with Paul and Dené or other attendees. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

Space is limited so register in advance at: https://secure.ngpvan.com/LZHyOaYADEuMjfFoM2EvuQ2
