Ins and Outs of Mushroom Hunting

Sunday, April 27, 2025
10:00 am12:00 pm
Platte River State Park

Mushrooms and other fungi can be found in a wide range of places over much of the year. In addition to the excitement of finding a tasty edible mushroom (this is the time of year for morels, so keep your fingers crossed!) people hunt mushrooms for photography, for art (including use in textile dying), and as an excuse to get out and move around. We will discuss the basics of safely and responsibly gathering mushrooms, and how to handle and prepare mushrooms to get the most out of them, before setting out to see what we can find.

Space is limited and registration is required to attend: https://secure.everyaction.com/6-oAdWQeT0yvlZFzLKVwoQ2

Exact meeting location will be emailed to registered attendees closer to the event date.

Lead presenter: Heather Hallen-Adams is an Associate Professor of Practice in Food Science and Technology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, specializing in food mycology (all the places where food and fungi intersect). Her research includes edible and poisonous mushrooms, the role of fungi in the human microbiome, and mycotoxin-producing fungi that infect wheat and corn. She is a resource for the Nebraska Poison Center for mushroom poisonings.
