Join Conservation Nebraska and Nebraska Extension for a free Zoom event that delves into the pressing issue of food deserts in rural Nebraska and the innovative solutions being implemented to combat food insecurity. This event will feature two impactful speakers who are actively addressing the challenges faced by rural communities.

Shawn Kaskie, an expert in rural development, will present his research on food deserts in Nebraska, as highlighted in his report Food Deserts in Nebraska. In his presentation, Kaskie will explore the scope and impact of food deserts on rural Nebraskans, providing insights into the geographic, economic, and social factors that contribute to food insecurity in these areas. His work sheds light on the unique challenges rural communities face in accessing fresh, affordable food and the ongoing need for sustainable solutions.

Cindy Houlden will share how cooperatives are playing a key role in alleviating food insecurity in rural Nebraska. Drawing from her expertise and the latest work from the Nebraska Cooperative Development Center, Houlden will discuss how cooperatives are driving positive change in rural communities. She will be joined by Eastlyn Wright who will discuss the Buy Fresh Buy Local program and how local foods can bridge the food insecurity gap.
